I would like to share some passages of Scripture with the readers today. These passage may shed some light on our present weather conditions.
Haggai 1:7-11 says, “This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Look at what’s happening to you! Now go up into the hills, bring down timber, and rebuild my house. Then I will take pleasure in it and be honored, says the Lord. You hoped for rich harvests, but they were poor. And when you brought your harvest home, I blew it away. Why? Because my house lies in ruins, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, while all of you are busy building your own fine houses. It’s because of you that the heavens withhold the dew and the earth produces no crops. I have called for a drought on your fields and hills—a drought to wither the grain and grapes and olive trees and all your other crops, a drought to starve you and your livestock and to ruin everything you have worked so hard to get.”
That’s a difficult passage in light of our present situation. Maybe we need to get our focus of attention back on the Lord?
Deuteronomy 28:20-25 says, “The Lord himself will send on you curses, confusion, and frustration in everything you do, until at last you are completely destroyed for doing evil and abandoning me. The Lord will afflict you with diseases until none of you are left in the land you are about to enter and occupy. The Lord will strike you with wasting diseases, fever, and inflammation, with scorching heat and drought, and with blight and mildew. These disasters will pursue you until you die. The skies above will be as unyielding as bronze, and the earth beneath will be as hard as iron. The Lord will change the rain that falls on your land into powder, and dust will pour down from the sky until you are destroyed.”
“The Lord will cause you to be defeated by your enemies. You will attack your enemies from one direction, but you will scatter from them in seven! You will be an object of horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.”
When was the last time our nation actually won a victory in war?
Have you noticed that the rest of this passage fits into our present condition?
2 Chronicles 7:13 says, “At times I might shut up the heavens so that no rain falls, or command grasshoppers to devour your crops, or send plagues among you.”
Could it be that God, due to our lack of acknowledging Him, Has decided to cast a curse upon our land?
If God has cursed us we need to take the message of 2 Chronicles 7:14 very seriously. “Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.”
I know that it’s hard for the people of God to see ourselves as the cause for a drought but I have been asking God to search my heart and life over the past few weeks. Maybe it’s time all of us who claim the name of Christ do the same.
Jeremiah 17:7-8 says, “But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.”
I happen to believe that it’s time for those who claim the name of Christ, myself included, to heed the message turn back to the Lord with our whole hearts.
